Brothers and Sisters
On Wednesday May 30th over 200 community, labour and social justice activists gathered to express solidarity with the Quebec Student Strike in Kingston. Thousands gathered across Canada to do the same. It was an excellent experience and we suggest you and your members attend one in your area. More events are being planned as I type. Check here for more information https://www.facebook.com/events/420350397995306.
This movement is breathing energy into the fight against austerity and the future that we leave behind for the next generation in this country. The pots and pans are loud and attention seeking. The march down Princess Street was a fun and empowering experience.
Just recently the OPSEU executive board passed a resolution supporting the quebec student movement. The student movement is becoming engaged and it is ever so important we participate and reach out to youth who face enormous challenges. As we fight in our communities for better paying jobs and quality public services, remember students are the ones we leave our jobs and public services too. Austerity and the recent federal and provincial budget proves we face challenges like we have never seen before in this Province and Country. Reaching out and building a movement to provide an alternative is the only option we have.
The Austerity road map is not the plan any of us want for the future. There are many options besides austerity and Brothers and Sisters we will have to fight back to ensure they happen. We cannot stand by and wait for the next election. Solidarity works and we as Union activists can learn a lot from the kind of solidarity that is occurring in Quebec. I saw a lot of hope and energy among the activists gathered there and it was very contagious. I recommend you get your dose next week in a community in your area. Bring your pot and wooden spoon. Red squares will be handed out and please wear them proudly.
I have added the address if your local would like to make a donation to the Quebec Student Union legal defense fund below and as well here is a link to a fact sheet on the Quebec Student Strike.
